After being told by my mother to avoid the north-east of Chicago in 2022, I spent the summer of 2023 in Saugatuck, Michigan—the epicentre of her restriction. As I looked over Lake Michigan from the shores of Saugatuck with transgressive relief, I recalled the days I stood on the other side of the lake in Chicago, full of longing.
I channeled this sense of yearning and disorientation into a flag book in which the double-sided design reflects the north-east and south-west proximity of the two cities, each interwoven with fragments of the other.
The mind will always be elsewhere.
